After she married, my mother lived in Cuba’s countryside for a while. She told me of an old time remedy country women used in order to be able to get out in the fields and back to work quicker, after child birth.
The midwife would make hen soup and the new mother would drink the hen broth soon after delivery. The following day they’d be ready to return to their farm duties. My mother can’t explain why they didn’t use just plain chicken soup…she just said hen soup worked 100% of the time.
Sometimes we can’t explain traditions and folk remedies, but as long as they work, they will (hopefully) be around for a very long time.
I’ll always look up to my mother. I respect her dearly. I saw in her determination and strength throughout my growing years. Now, as a grown woman with a child of my own I realize her past struggles. I can only imagine what it must have been like to enter in a new country with only the clothes on her back and 2 small babies.
She quickly tried to adapt to her new home while maintaining the old traditions, remedies and cures…especially in times of very poor cash flow. I carry some of those traits within me today; I don’t believe our new commercialized, technological society is always the answer.
