Some Toxic Home Cleaners and Their Natural Healthier Alternatives:

Carpet and upholstery cleaner – try some white vinegar and water

Dish and laundry detergents – do your dishes by hand using a natural mild soap such as Ivory or Simple Green. For laundry detergent, again use Ivory or Simple Green or make your own by mixing melted natural soap shavings, washing soda and baking soda or borax as brighteners and water softeners.

Toilet bowl cleaner – To maintain your toilet bowl clean and deodorized just add some lemon juice to your bowl water a little each day; to clean it use a baking soda and water paste and some elbow grease. Bon Ami is also a safe abrasive cleanser for your entire bathroom especially your tiles if you have any and helps prevent mold and mildew naturally which by the way…always avoid those mold and mildew cleansers!

Drain cleaner – try some boiling water, baking soda and white distilled vinegar down your drain.

Furniture Polish – try some lemon oil.

Antibacterial soap and cleansers are not at all necessary and should be avoided!

Air fresheners – these are simply the worst. Just try keeping your home naturally clean and open up those windows every once in a while!

Oven cleaners – these have to really be the worst, just leave a paste of water, salt and baking soda over night and turn your oven on the next day for about an hour at a low temperature then simply wipe off. I only clean mine about twice a year anyway or when I feel like it which is usually never, the high temperature of the oven kills any bacteria anyway and just make sure you make friends that are not in the habit of opening up your oven, refrigerator or looking in your tub.
